I absolutely adore egg rolls, and I’m going to go ahead and assume you do too. Now, you might be wondering: “what’s the difference between an egg roll and a spring roll?” Good question. Spring rolls are wrapped in rice paper whereas egg rolls are wrapped in a flour dough wrap, sort of like a very thin pancake. They are commonly stuffed with pork, shrimp, or chicken along with some sort of veggies and then deep fried. I think it’s safe to say that unless you’re some sort of monster, you’re never unhappy to see an egg roll on your plate.
The problem is, it’s damn near impossible to know with certainty that you’re about to get a quality egg roll. Frankly, we’re all busy people, there’s no time to lose sampling Toronto’s egg rolls to find the best of the best. Well, we’ve done the greasy grunt work for you! Here are 5 places you need to go if you’re in T.O. and on the hunt for a good egg roll. Some of these egg roll hot-spots serve Vietnamese-style rolls, some Chinese, so pick your poison and enjoy!
Not Just Noodles- 570 Yonge St
Though the space is nothing special, the taste sure is. Here you will find Vietnamese, Chinese, and Thai eats with the option for takeout or delivery. Their egg rolls are made with pork and I must say, they’re top of the line. The rest of the menu is affordable and delicious, as well. You truly can’t go wrong with Not Just Noodles.
Peking Express- 217 Parliament St
If you’re not playing around and you’re on the hunt for traditional Chinese fare, I highly suggest you go here! Peking Express has been going strong on Parliament for nearly 30 years and I’m looking forward to 30 more. In one of many rave reviews received by this hot-spot, the Toronto Star asked: “how long has it been since you had a proper egg roll?” So, if you don’t believe me, there’s some cold hard evidence that these guys really know their way around an egg roll.
Kim Vietnamese Restaurant - 546 Dundas Street W
This simple little eatery serves up mouth-watering Vietnamese cuisine including pho, noodles, shakes, coffees, and of course, egg rolls! Honestly, they are just SO good at what they do. Each dish is cooked to perfection with the perfect amount of flavour and spices. It’s Vietnamese comfort food done right. Even if you’re not into egg rolls (impossible), try anything else on the menu and you will not be disappointed.
Mi Mi Restaurant - 88 Gerrard St E
Here we have a cozy, laid-back, family owned restaurant where you can enjoy a variety of delicious Vietnamese dishes. It is located right in the heart of old China Town and has a wonderful energy. They are beyond friendly and more than happy to make adjustments for dietary restrictions. I’d highly recommend Mi Mi to anyone looking for tasty Vietnamese in Toronto. Not to mention the egg rolls are an unearthly amount of crispy and soft. Must-try for sure!
C’est Bon Chinese Restaurant - 140 Yonge St
I’m going to start by saying: they have deep fried mars bars! If you like egg rolls, you’re obviously not opposed to a little grease, so you might as well treat yo’self one step further. This relaxed dining room has a lovely atmospher; a menu full of amazing dishes, and a lovely staff. The food is as authentic as can be (outside of China, of course), and I would highly recommend giving it a try.
Happy eating, Toronto! You should probably go get yourself an egg roll ASAP.
